Critical Urban theory is an advanced seminar offered at brown university in the urban studies program by professor stefano bloch. the class focuses on aspects of URBANISM that typically allude broad analyses of the city. rather than “BEST PRACTICES” for urban reform or taking the city for granted as a unit of analysis, we look at nuanced approaches to the concept and practice of the “RIGHT TO THE CITY” FROM A DIVERSITY OF INCLUSIVE, EMANCIPATORY, and radical PERSPECTIVES at the scale of the local and the personal. The 20 projects on this site critically address urbanism by looking at manifestations of race, gender, sexuality, community, and intersectional & subcultural identity in the built environment.
